Mac Desktop Client Can Not Show Note Content

I am a client-end user of Citrix. My company's IT department have essentially stopped trying to help me with my problems, so I'm hoping someone here can solve my issues. Sorry if some of this is a bit pedantic. I used the Mac Citrix client for much of last year without a hitch on my Mac, running 10.3.x (I think I updated a couple of times, with no effect on how Citrix worked). I'd connect to the server, the Citrix ICA splash screen would pop up, with the connection status information, then the 'main window' would pop open and I would see my remote desktop log in. And it was fine. Late last year, my company switched servers, so I was supposed to (and I did) change the IP address I was to connect to.

Ever since that time, however, I have not been able to use my Mac Citrix client. When I connect to the server, I get the splash screen that gives the status of the client connecting to the server, which culminates in it telling me that the client has connected. But no main window opens.

If it is the truth that it is not working well with newest version, you can at least use Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0.1. If the newest version works well, you can ignore the Note 'icrosoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac (version2.1.1) is not intended for use with Mac OS X v10.7 (Lion) or later.' I should also mention that this is the case in both Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016. We have Office 365 Business Premium with Exchange Online. Office 365 allows you to install the full desktop clients that function exactly the same as an on-premises solution. For the most part, they work fine. 'Remote Desktop Connection' for mac has an option to hide the menu bar in full screen mode. I am unable to locate this option in the new Microsoft Remote Desktop. Without this option the remote desktop connection bar becomes completely inaccessible.

I appear to be able to connect, but then nothing happens. I went to my IT people, who are Windows-centric, and they have very little to suggest. The only Mac-focused person there told me she got another employee's Mac client to work by having them make Netscape their default browser instead of Safari. I thought that was odd, since previously Safari was fine, but hey, I'll give it a shot. Well, that didn't work, nor did IE or Firefox.

After that, my IT department basically gave up trying to help. This is very frustrating and really inexcusable - I have to travel a lot and need to get this working. Their only answer to me is to buy a PC. That isn't a solution, and it shouldn't be necessary! Any thoughts or suggestions? Stephen, First off, it would help if we knew the version of Citrix Presentation Servers your farm is running.

But, even without that, I have a few ideas. While using Safari, did you use the Java client? Or the OSX ICA Client? Because you said you used Safari, I assume you used the Java client. It's possible in the server migration, your administrators disabled the Java client.

This would require you to either use the OSX ICA Client, or get them to re-enable the Java client. My experience with Safari has been that when enabled on the server, the Java client will load automatically, while Safari won't directly load Citrix sessions with the OSX ICA Client. To get an OSX ICA Client session to load from a browser, you will need another browser. I'd recommend the latest version of Firefox. After installing Firefox, load the latest version of the OSX ICA Client. After install, open the ICA Client Editor, select 'Options-Default Settings' from the top menubar, then in the 'Making a Connection-Server Location' tab, try changing the network protocol to 'TCP/IP'. Click the 'Save' button and close the Client Editor.

Now try loading a session again. That 'TCP/IP' setting is what we use in our setup, but yours may be different. Your server admins are the ones who should know what protocol to use, but I hope that isn't a dead end for you.

If 'TCP/IP' doesn't work, try another setting and see if that does. Mark - Thanks for posting!

I'll see what I can find out re: the version of CPS the firm uses. I'm using the ICA client. I only brought up Safari because my IT people said that the browser mattered. Following your tips, I've downloaded the most recent version of Firefox for Mac - 1.0.4 - and ensured I have the most recent version of the Mac ICA client 7.00.405. I made Firefox my default browser (an aside: why in the world that's a preference in Safari instead of a System Preference is beyond comprehension). I recall from when things worked for me that TCP/IP was the protocol, but unfortunately.

This didn't help in my case. I end up with the CITRIX splash window with a status of 'Connection Status: Connected to xxx.xx.xx.xx' (note that it of course doesn't actually read that - but I'm not going to post the server info!). I hasten to add that this is not a problem with my computer. I've tried to connect from three different macs without success. I'll see if I can pry any information from the IT department - would there be anything else useful to know aside from the Citrix Presentation Servers version? Thanks again for your time and help. Well, it sounds like you've got the right software installed.

If things were working fine, then stopped working on multiple systems due to a CPS upgrade, I think it's pretty clear something has changed beyond the client workstation level. At this point, it sounds more server or network related. It's unfortunate your IT department isn't trying to investigate this issue themselves. As an end-user you will have to 'pry' what specifics you can to try and relate your environment to us. I'm concerned we won't see the big picture, and possibly miss something.

Have them look at KB article CTX104897 to eliminate that possibility. Well, I'm in wait-and-see mode. The IT department reemphasized that they don't support macs, but one member of the department has a Mac and has managed to maintain Citrix on it, so she's going to take a look at the situation on a time-available basis. Better than nothing, certainly! The part that mystifies me is that this employee apparently has the Mac Citrix ICA client working with the system. If that's true (she did emphasize that she hasn't used it in a while, so.

Who knows, really?), then it sounds like the problem could indeed be on the client-end, which would be surprising, given what we've troubleshot so far. Well, if any progress is made or if I am able to provide more information that could help troubleshoot this, I will post back here. Again, thanks for your help so far, Mark! I did find a solution, though I don't know if it will be helpful to either of you. I have three different Macs, and all of them were having the same problem - so I just didn't even think that this could possibly be the solution: trashing my citrix ICA client preference files. It's the first thing mac users typically do when programs begin to act weird, so I guess I should have done it in the first place. But I just never quite believed that I could have had three corrupted preference files on three different Macs.

    Mac

Ever since trashing those files, it's been smooth sailing. If you don't know where to find your preference files, they're in /Users/(your name)/Library/Preferences. Don't worry about deleting them - the next time you launch Citrix, it will create a new preferences file. Hope that works for you!

After two days of figuring out what was the problem I have found that the file citrixid who is located in '/Users/(your name)/Library/Preferences/citrix ica client' is preventing me accessing the server, I have copied from a client that is working normal and voila, the client connects without a problem. Obviously you need a citrixid preference of a machine that is working normally, we have here about 30 working and two machines with this weird problem.

If I delete the preferences on a machine that is working normal and connect again to the server I will again have the error. Hope it helps for everybody. I also ran into this problem.

I work for an NPO which has a WAN of about 300 systems (all Windows, but I like to work on the network and assist users from my home office, where I get to use Macs). When I upgraded to Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4), Citrix ICA Client began logging me on to the server but would not open the Metaframe window. I followed the advice given earlier in this thread; I found and deleted my Citrix preferences folder (/Library/Preferences/Citrix ICA Client). This folder also contains the citrixid file, so deleting this folder will also delete this file.

When I next launched Citrix ICA Client, the preferences folder was rebuilt, including the citrixid file, and behaved correctly from that moment on. If you are having this problem, be sure and try deleting the Citrix preferences folder. Thanks to all who contribute to the forum. I had exactly the same problem as outlined in the posts above. I tried deleting prefs, etc., but nothing worked. Searching further, I found in another thread the following solution. And it DOES WORK!

I am running Tiger 10.4.4 & Citrix 7.00.407. Everything works perfect. If you follow the below instructions, it will work with all browsers, and it works if you set up a independent connection (without a browser). If you have having trouble connecting after updating to 10.4.3, remove the word 'smartcard' from the config file 'Modules' found in /Library/Preferences/Citrix ICA Client/. Look for this string: 'VirtualDriver=Thinwire3.0, ClientDrive, ClientAudio, ClientPrinter, Clipboard, ClientManagement, ClientComm, ZLFONT, ZLC, TWI, ICACTL,' and remove the word 'Smartcard' at the end. This really works.I have tried on two machines G4 & G5, and this solved the problem.

I hope this relieves the need for others to search further.
